Google’s July Workspace update gives Gemini more work inside the document-review process. The company says its new features can turn comment threads into suggested edits in Docs and build an editable Slides presentation from existing files.
The 29 July announcement describes features rolling out to Workspace customers. It also includes video tools, additional language support and an audio connection between Meet and Android Auto.
From feedback to proposed changes
Gemini in Docs can synthesise comment threads, create and respond to comments, and suggest changes to the document that a user can accept. That places the assistant closer to the moment when colleagues’ feedback becomes part of the final text.
The distinction between a suggestion and an accepted edit remains useful. A comment may contain a factual correction, a stylistic preference or a question that has not been resolved. Summarising them together does not establish which view should govern the final document.
Teams using the feature will still need a person responsible for resolving conflicting instructions and checking factual changes. The announcement describes an editing capability, not an independent verification service.
Google also says Docs can create and revise images, diagrams and infographics using the document’s context. A diagram derived from a draft should be checked against the underlying evidence, especially when it includes quantities or simplifies a technical process.
Building a deck from existing material
The new Slides workflow starts with a description of the presentation and can use existing decks to match formatting. Gemini draws context from Docs, Sheets, PDFs and previous presentations, asks clarifying questions and creates a plan before producing an editable deck.
Editable output gives the author room to repair structure, wording and visual choices. It does not remove the need to examine how material has been carried across from the source files. A caveat in a document can disappear when compressed into a slide title.
The same monthly update adds ways to turn presentations into videos with Vids presenters and scripts. These are separate production features; a presentation generated in Slides does not have to become a video.
Availability and administration
Google says the update expands Gemini app data-region controls to the EU or US and adds eleven languages to Gemini in Docs. The release does not state that every feature reaches every account simultaneously.
For administrators, the immediate work is to check the account’s available features and controls before changing a team workflow. For authors, the useful test is whether the new tools shorten the path to an accurate, approved document. The ATLAS research on AI use explains why activity alone cannot answer that question.
