Microsoft has made Copilot Cowork available through its Frontier early-access programme, giving participating organisations a way to delegate longer tasks across their Microsoft 365 work. In its 30 March announcement, the company describes a system that develops a plan from a requested outcome and shows progress as it works across tools and files.
The release moves beyond a single answer in a chat window. Microsoft’s examples include calendar management, daily briefings and repeatable assignments such as a monthly budget review. The user can steer the work while it is in progress, rather than supplying one instruction and seeing only a final output.
Early access needs a bounded assignment
Frontier is the access route announced for this release. Availability through that programme should not be taken to mean that every Microsoft 365 user already has the feature or that every proposed workflow has been validated in their organisation.
For a team trying the service, a useful first assignment has a clear end condition: assemble specified documents, produce a draft briefing and leave it for review. A broad instruction to manage an entire project is harder to assess because it mixes information gathering, interpretation and decisions that may need different permissions.
Microsoft says Cowork incorporates technology from Anthropic alongside Microsoft capabilities. The relevant question for an employer is how the resulting workflow handles its actual files, access rules and review points. The announcement describes the product’s intended behaviour; it is not an independent test of reliability on a particular company’s tasks.
Researcher adds a separate review step
The same announcement introduces Critique for Researcher. One model prepares the research task and draft, while another evaluates and refines the work before the final report is produced. Microsoft also describes a model Council feature for comparing answers side by side.
That separation may expose disagreements or omissions which a single response would hide. Agreement between models, however, cannot by itself establish that a claim matches the underlying document. A user still needs to inspect consequential citations and check whether the sources answer the question being asked.

The practical test for an early adopter is whether Cowork completes a defined assignment with an understandable record of its work, and whether a person can intervene before a consequential action. Those are measurable questions for a trial, without assuming that a product announcement settles them.
