The Ministry of Finance sets small savings rates every quarter. For July–September 2026 the 3-year Post Office Time Deposit pays 7.1% a year, quarterly. The rate was the same in every quarter from October–December 2024 to July–September 2026.

Rules.

  • Term: 3 years
  • Minimum deposit: ₹1,000 and in multiples of ₹100
  • Maximum: No maximum limit
  • Interest payable annually but calculated quarterly.
  • No additional interest on interest due but not withdrawn.
  • No withdrawal before 6 months; closure after 6 months but before 1 year earns the Post Office Savings Account rate.
  • Premature closure of 2/3/5-year TD after 1 year: rate 2% less than TD rate for completed years.
