The Ministry of Finance sets small savings rates every quarter. For July–September 2026 the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana pays 8.2% a year, yearly. The rate was the same in every quarter from October–December 2024 to July–September 2026.

Rules.

  • Term: 21 years from opening (or marriage after 18); deposits for 15 years
  • Minimum deposit: ₹250 per financial year
  • Maximum: ₹1,50,000 per financial year
  • Opened by guardian for girl child below 10 years.
  • One account per girl; max two girls per family (more for twins/triplets).
  • Deposits in multiples of ₹50, up to completion of 15 years from opening.
  • Default if ₹250 not deposited in a financial year; revival ₹250 + ₹50 per defaulted year.
  • Interest on lowest balance between close of 5th day and end of month; credited at financial year end.
  • Withdrawal up to 50% of previous financial year-end balance after age 18 or passing 10th.
  • Closure on marriage after 18 (not earlier than 1 month before / later than 3 months after marriage).

Tax. Deposits qualify for Section 80C (now section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025); interest tax free. India Post states these rules under the Income-tax Act, 1961; from 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies with new section numbers.
