The Ministry of Finance sets small savings rates every quarter. For July–September 2026 the Post Office Savings Account pays 4% a year, annually. The rate was the same in every quarter from October–December 2024 to July–September 2026.

Rules.

  • Minimum deposit: ₹500 (opening)
  • Maximum: No maximum limit
  • Interest calculated on minimum balance between 10th and end of month.
  • No interest for a month if balance between 10th and last day below ₹500.
  • Interest credited at end of each financial year.

Tax. Section 80TTA: interest up to ₹10,000 per FY from all savings accounts exempt. India Post states these rules under the Income-tax Act, 1961; from 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies with new section numbers.
