The Ministry of Finance sets small savings rates every quarter. For July–September 2026 the Post Office Recurring Deposit pays 6.7% a year, quarterly. The rate was the same in every quarter from October–December 2024 to July–September 2026.
Rules.
- Term: 5 years (60 monthly deposits); extendable 5 years
- Minimum deposit: ₹100 per month or any amount in multiples of ₹10
- Maximum: No maximum limit
- Deposit by 15th if opened 1st–15th; by last working day if opened 16th onward.
- Default fee ₹1 per ₹100 denomination per month; discontinued after 4 defaults.
- Rebate on advance deposit of 6+ instalments.
- Loan up to 50% after 12 instalments at RD rate + 2%.
- Premature closure after 3 years at the Post Office Savings Account rate.
- Extension for 5 years at original rate.
